K-1 Visa Summary
With a K-1 visa, the fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen is able to travel to the U.S. in order to marry their sponsor within 90 days of arrival. Once married, the visa holder can then apply to become a permanent resident. If the visa applicant has eligible children, they can receive K-2 visas.
The K-1 Visa Process
The first step in obtaining a K-1 visa is to file Form I-129F with a USCIS office that serves your place of residence. The form must be filed by the U.S. citizen sponsor within the United States.
Once USCIS approves the petition, the National Visa Center (NVC) will contact you and send your application to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate that serves your fiancé(e)'s place of residence.
Once the petition is at the embassy, the fiancé(e) will need to apply for a K-1 visa. During the application process, the applicant will be interviewed and asked to submit supporting documents.

Documentation that is required includes:
- Form DS-160
- A valid passport
- Divorce or death certificates if either party was previously married
- Police certificates
- Medical examination
- Evidence of financial support
- Photographs
